Johns’ Well and Campground

Located on Old Justin Road at Taylor Road in Argyle, just east of I-35W, the site of Johns’ Well and Campground is now commemorated by a small park area encorporating the well, a bench and historical marker.  The campground was originally established  in 1884 by members of the Prairie Mound Methodist Church on land provided by Hardin Johns.

After serving the area for a number of years, the site was finally sold in 1913.  The well continued to provide water for the surrounding area until 1963.

There is a path leading off into the undergrowth to the south east of the well, little else remains to indicate the location of the 10 day annual camp meetings.

The historical marker was placed at this location in 1982 and the site is listed in the registry as Marker # 5121002827.

On June 26th, 1986 the Texas Sesquicentennial Wagon Train stopped here.  A marker has been placed on  the south side of the well (away from the road) to commemorate this event.

The site is photographed at street level by Google Maps at Johns’ Well.
